East Peak for Young People
Project from Apr 2010 until Nov 2011
The East Peak for Young People Project funded by the East Peak Innovation Partnership is an 18 month project working with young people aged 11 –16 over the three East Peak areas to support them to use, enjoy and value the East Peak.
The East Peak areas are North Sheffield, Penistone & District and Kirkburton & Denby Dale.
The project aims to consult with young people to find out what they value and find special about their area. Following on from this young people are then provided the opportunity to contribute their ideas and skills to design and implement their own environmental projects.
The consultation events took place from April – Aug 2010 and gathered the views of 1251 young people through online surveys, paper questionnaires and lunchtime consultations
In response to what was found, the East Peak for Young People project now focuses on working with young people in green spaces that are very local to them. Projects have included activities such as building bird boxes, minibeast hotels, clearing up youth shelters, building paths, creating kitchen gardens, breeze block sculpting and much more. The funding is being made available through the Rural Development Programme for England, which is being jointly funded by Defra and the European Union.
