Connecting with the Environment
Project from Sept-Oct 2011
en:volve have recieved funds from the North and South East Community Assembly Targeted Youth Support grant to engage 13-19 year olds from diverse and disadvantaged communities to encourage them to connect, enjoy and care for their environment. Working towards a John Muir Award the young people will discover, explore, share and conserve a wild place.
Consultations with young people on our previous projects record that they often feel isolated from their local community and feel that their ideas and opinions are ignored. However they do feel a sense of ownership for the environment and value the opportunity to get involved and improve it.
By involving young people in environmental projects, we hope to give them the chance to work together with other young people from different communities to achieve fun and challenging tasks.
On Carr House Meadows young people learnt how to use various tools safely including billhooks, bowsaws, pen knives and fire flints to make natural dens, mallets and kazoos. Working over four days the young people increased their confidence, skills and team work.
At Carbrook Nature Reserve young people created a base camp and made witches brooms, woodland games were also incorporated in to the sessions as they extended their activities for natural play.
